RAEE

Electrical and electronic equipment They are the subject of the collection TV, PC, HI-FI, videogames, refrigerators, kitchens, small electro-domestic, lamps, neon, toner. Tagged under: R.A.E.E. are electrical and electronic waste, computers, monitors, phones, washing machines, dishwashers, refrigerators, lamps, neon, toner…

The R.A.E.E. is the Waste of Electronic and Electrical Equipment and represents the category of waste in the fastest growing globally with a growth rate of 3-5% per year, three times higher than normal waste.

The increasing diffusion of electronic devices leads to an increasing risk of abandonment in the environment or in landfills and waste-to-energy plants (incinerators) with consequences of soil, air and water pollution with repercussions on human health.

Examples of R.A.E.E.:
• Large household appliances
• Small electrical appliances
• Computer and telecommunications equipment
• Consumer equipment
• Lighting equipment
• Electrical and electronic instruments (except large industrial stationary tools)
• Sports and leisure toys and equipment
• Medical devices (except all implanted and infected products)
• Monitoring and control tools
• Vending machines

R.A.E.E. are classified into two broad categories, depending on their use in the domestic or professional environment, establishing different paths of recovery and disposal:
– R.A.E.E. Domestic appliances used in houses or similar for use even if they come from other areas
– R.A.E.E. Professionals from economic or administrative activities

A separate distinction must be made with the R.A.E.E. of lighting equipment. These last ones constitute the most numerous type of R.A.E.E. : approximately 80% of all R.A.E.E. for number of pieces.

Lighting equipment is classified into:
– Light sources (linear and non-linear fluorescent tubes; non-integrated compact fluorescent lamps; integrated energy-saving compact fluorescent lamps, high-intensity, high-pressure or low-pressure discharge lamps, excluding incandescent and halogen lamps);
– Lighting fittings (for example, chandeliers, ceiling lights, etc.).

The legislation identifies 5 groups of Hi-Tech waste in which they are sorted according to their type and according to the technologies necessary for their correct treatment:
• Grouping R1 – cold and climate (refrigerators, air conditioners and water heaters);
• Grouping R2 – large whites (washing machines, dishwashers, ovens, hobs, etc…);
• Grouping R3 – tv and monitor;
• Grouping R4 – small household appliances, consumer electronics, lighting fixtures and other;
• Grouping R5 – light sources;

R.A.E.E. may contain substances such as heavy metals, brominated flame retardants, halogenated substances, ozone depleting substances. Many of these substances represent a potential danger to the environment if they are not properly treated or disposed of.

The treatment of R.A.E.E. is carried out in suitably equipped centres, authorised for waste management and adapted to the “R.A.E.E.” Decree, using the best available techniques.

The treatment activities include several phases, indicatively:
• securing or remediation, or removal of hazardous components;
• disassembly of sub-assemblies and preliminary separation of materials;
• mechanical processing for the recovery of materials;

Disposal R.A.E.E.E. Plastic recovery R.A.E.E.E. Disposal R.A.E.E. – lamp recovery glass
The activity of reuse of equipment after a functional test is an option provided for in the legislation on R.A.E., but there is no legislation on equipment returned to the market.

The processes of recycling and treatment of waste lighting equipment allow to recover considerable quantities of materials equal to about 90% of the entire product, thus thinking of their subsequent reintroduction into the market. In particular, think of the glass that is currently the material with the greatest commercial potential, being able to be reused in the field of construction (glass wool and insulation)in the field of glazing tiles and in the future also in the production of the lamps themselves. From the different R.A.E.E., moreover, it is also possible to obtain iron, aluminum, copper and plastics.
The treatment and recycling of R.A.E.E. is also fundamental for the presence in these objects of potentially polluting components such as the mercury contained in modern light bulbs. The presence of mercury inside the light sources varies depending on the type of lamp: linear fluorescent lamps contain between 3 and 30 mg of mercury, compact fluorescents between 5 and 10 mg, while high intensity discharge lamps between 20 and 50 mg of mercury. The dangerousness of this metal is recognized by numerous studies. The separate collection of waste from light sources prevents waste from being treated in the same way as municipal solid waste. This reduces pollution resulting from mercury emissions, for the health of people and the environment in general.

Since January 2008, according to D.Lgs. 151/05, the management of R.A.E.E. has passed into the hands of producers, who are responsible for the planning and management of collection systems; today it is possible to return the waste free of charge directly to the dealer, when purchasing equipment of the same type.

All electronic equipment shall be clearly, visibly and indelibly marked with an indication identifying the same manufacturer and the symbol indicating that the equipment is to be collected separately.

Our company Eco Ambiente Sud S.r.l. is a national platform of the R.A.E.E.
Our service provides the supply of containers approved according to the various types of R.A.E.E. (waste electrical and electronic equipment) and then a service of micro and macro collection with our authorized means.
